October 7, 2021 | October is Respect Life Month

We believe that all life is sacred, and that every person is created in the image and likeness of God. We must share the good news that every person is loved by God and that we are called to defend the dignity of life from conception until natural death.

Be encouraged to engage in one or several of the following ways to be an advocate for the innocent unborn who can’t speak for themselves, pray for the sanctity of life.  Please also share this message with anyone you know who is able to help or would like to participate.

You may have chosen abortion personally, lost a child to abortion, or your life has been profoundly affected by abortion. SaveOne can help you through the healing process. Click here to start your journey today.

You Belong to Jesus

“If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off!”

Many of us know well this teaching from Christ in our Gospel this weekend.  How many of us though take Him seriously?

It’s easy to note the problematic areas of our life and our habitual sin, but it takes work, (both from submitting to God and our own efforts), to identify and ROOT out our sources of sin.  The trappings of this earth will pass away; do we take seriously the health of our souls?

To prepare our hearts before we go to Holy Mass this weekend and to learn more about how God calls us to be fully alive in our relationship with Christ watch this short video from Father Stephen Gadberry (a veteran of the US Air Force, Cross-Fit coach, and pastor of St. Mary’s) on the Flocknote email.

We  look forward to seeing you at any of the Holy Mass times this weekend wherein the Deacons will be preaching, or stop by to visit Jesus at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel or at daily Mass during the week.

The Deaf Hear and the Mute Speak

Have you ever witnessed miraculous healing?  Was it a friend, teammate, family member, or even yourself?

God wants us healed!  He wants all of His creation whole again!  Signs of healing and wonders would accompany the Messiah, the Old Testament prophets affirmed: the blind would see, the deaf would hear, and the lame would leap!  When Jesus began His miraculous healings, many believed that this was indeed the evidence that He was the chosen one, the Son of God.

To prepare our hearts before we go to Holy Mass this weekend and to learn more about how God is offering the gift of healing to us all watch this short video on the Flocknote email.

We  look forward to seeing you at any of the Holy Mass times this weekend wherein Father James will be preaching, or stop by to visit Jesus at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel or at daily Mass during the week.

September 2, 2021 | alpha

September 2, 2021 | who will you invite or go with to alpha on sept 16th?

Did you know that . . .

For millennials, disagreement is now interpreted as judgment, and that this interpretation is up over 100% from older generations.

Twice as many millennials outside the church are interested in learning more about Christianity and what it could mean for their lives compared to older non-Christians.

The top qualities they would look for in a person with whom to talk about faith are:
“listens without judgment” (62%)
“does not force a conclusion” (50%)

However, only a minority would say the Christians they know personally possess these qualities:
listens without judgment (34%)
does not force a conclusion (26%)

The future blueprint of our Church must create more space to listen.

This isn’t just the way forward… it’s been the way of Jesus all along.

Our current cultural moment finds many of us without connection and community and within an increasingly growing-hostile-to-Christianity secular society. Some may even wonder if God is there and if He cares. Like the shepherd in the parable of the lost sheep, Jesus is still seeking out those far from Him. He longs to be with them, to comfort them, and draw them near.  He invites us to seek them out, too.

Alpha at Our Lady of Mercy is upon us once again, it is where people have been hospitably welcomed to bring questions, disorientation, and even hostility to the table—and experience love through listening.

Who will you invite or go with to Alpha?

Or perhaps the guiding question is do any of the following resonate with you. . .

Are you tired of the negativity and divisiveness out there? Consider the fraternity that Alpha brings is a comfort, a unitive comfort in a culture that now interprets a personal disagreement on an issue as judgment.
Alpha shakes us out of the divisiveness and brings us back to the unitive power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You come to realize that we are all on a journey, we are all in this together and that’s how we build up the body of Christ as one.

If you’re hungry literally (because it’s awesome free food being served), physically, spiritually, and mentally; you’ll want to come to Alpha.

If life’s just dull, gray, boring.

If you know someone skeptical, hostile, not sure of their purpose, identity, or where they belong.

Or maybe you got it all; the nice car, the nice house, a good family, living a good life but find you are hungry, restless… come to Alpha.

We are all restless in some way or form because we’re made for God. He’s the one who has created us and called us into friendship. And until “I know Him, I’m always going to be hungry, I’m always going to be restless.”  So if you’re experiencing this right now, Alpha is for you.  If you’ve got friends experiencing this right now, invite them because what they’re hungry for, even if they don’t know it, is Jesus.

Our Story Is Real

Whether you’ve already started coming back to Mass or not, we hope these reasons will inspire you and your friends and family.

Why should you come back to Mass?  Because the story of our faith is REAL!

Jesus historically lived, died, and rose from the dead. The Biblical sites exist and can be visited today.  Our story of faith isn’t a myth, legend, or something in a galaxy far, far away.

What’s more, God wants us to take an active role in passing on this reality to others. We’re in the age of evangelization where the Holy Spirit wants us to be fueled by the Word and Eucharist at Mass and then go out to bring this real Jesus to others. And who better to aid us in doing this than our Blessed Mother, Mary.  Our Mother, who intercedes for us and cheers us on that we too might participate in this life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ and sharing it with others.

This Sunday is the Solemnity of her Assumption, of when Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven — it is the culmination of her faith-filled yes to the angel’s invitation to become the Mother of God.  As we celebrate Mary’s faithfulness this Sunday, let’s also think about our own yeses to the Lord, the small ones as well as the big ones.

“Lord, give me the grace to say yes to You in every moment.”

Listen to the short 2-minute message on the Flocknote email from Bobby Angel that details the reality of our Christian story.

We look forward to seeing you at any of the Holy Mass times this weekend or stop by to visit Jesus at Blessed Sacrament Chapel or at daily Mass during the week.

God Loves You

Whether you’ve already started coming back to Mass or not, we hope these reasons will inspire you and your friends and family.

Why should you come back to Mass?  Because the God of the universe loves YOU!

THIS COMING WEEK

A note on Reception of Holy Communion

  • Communion on the hand is still the preferable option.
  • Communion on the tongue is allowed at the pastor’s discretion.  At our parish, only the priests/deacons will distribute communion on the tongue. The extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion will not distribute communion on the tongue. To receive communion on the tongue, you must go to one of the lines where a priest or deacon is distributing.
  • For those concerned about receiving communion on the hand following someone who just received communion on the tongue, please note that the priest/deacon has a cloth in their hand treated with hand sanitizer. After a person receives communion on the tongue, the priest/deacon wipes their fingers on this cloth, reducing the possibility of transmission of viruses. If one is still uncomfortable, please receive communion from one of the extraordinary communion ministers instead of the priest/deacon.

Why should you come back to Mass?  Because the Church is your home and we miss you!

THIS COMING WEEK

Please help us to better serve you!
  • Please let us know how you are doing by filling the survey out.  We continue to invite and pray that everyone comes back soon, we are also making plans for parish community-wide gatherings in August 20 thru 22 (save the date). To assist us with both of these, we would be most grateful if you can please fill out this quick, anonymous survey (2 minutes tops!) or tomar la encuesta.
The next AMA Ask Me Anything with Father James is on Monday 7/19
  • We’ve learned so much through the questions you asked! Thank you for submitting them.  Check out the AMA webpage to view the video of Part 2 (and Part 1) of the AMAas well as to submit any more of your “great’ questions!  The website also lists out all the questions that Father James answered such as “Why does mass attendance on Sunday matter? Can’t we just go during the week on the day that’s most convenient? What if we have to work on Sunday?”
  • The next one will be on Monday 7/19th at 7:30pm as Father James will continue to answer the questions you submitted.
Magnify on 7/21
  • Monthly Magnify is on 7/21st at 7pm. With the summer season comes swimming, sun, and BBQ.  But while summer can bring some much-needed time to slow down our lives and rest, it can also be tempting to take a break from prayer or even attending Mass itself. Rather, let’s come out to Magnify and have that personal contact with the living Jesus. Share your heart with Him to be loved by Him as you are.
Support Mundelein Seminary on 7/22
  • Join Mundelein Seminary for the online presentation of the 2021 Celebration of Mundelein at 7pm, where this year it is honoring the leadership and ministry of Bishop Ronald Hicks ’94 of the Diocese of Joliet and featuring seminarian interviews, musical performances and more!
  • Please consider a gift to help the seminary reach the $100k matching goal www.usml.edu/celebrate.  Supporting Mundelein Seminary makes it possible for our parishes in our Diocese to form priests to be “formed in tradition, trained in compassion, prepared to shepherd” like Father Mark, Father James and soon to be priest Deacon Tom.

Registration for the new Religious Education program which is now called Parish Family Evangelization and Catechesis
  • Please proceed here for registration and details for taking part in the K-5, EDGE, and LIGHT programs.
  • Do you have questions or would like to find out more about the exciting new offerings for the parents and children? Save the date and come out to one of the townhall meetings on Wednesday 7/28 at 7pm and Sunday 8/8 at 11am.

Heed God’s Voice

“Are we open to the voice of God?

“Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you,” the author of Ezekiel notes in our first reading this Sunday, and Jesus Himself faces obstinancy in His ministry: “A prophet is not without honor except in His native place and among His own kin and in His own house.” (Mark 6:1-6).

Throughout the ages, people have been closed off to hearing from the messengers of God and answering the life-giving call to conversion.  Sometimes we’re stubborn or would rather do things “our way.”  Sometimes we’re stuck in our sin and don’t want to be challenged.  Sometimes. . .we just don’t care.

God wants better for us.  Jesus wants to break through to our stony hearts and invite us to new life.  Will we let Him?

We invite you to watch the short video on the Flocknote email, to help us prepare ourselves to participate at Holy Mass where Father James is preaching. The video is from Sr. Josephine Garrett, a sister and friend of the Word on Fire Institute, to learn more about the breakthrough of Jesus in the world.

Safe travels, for those of you traveling out of town, otherwise we hope to see you soon at Holy Mass; come celebrate the 4th of July holiday weekend with us.

THIS COMING WEEK

Please help us to better serve you!

Happy Independence Day!

Here is a snippet from American Catholic history that is often little known and unexpected from the podcast American Catholic History.

George Washington, Catholic?

Ever since he died, there has been speculation that George Washington converted to Catholicism on his deathbed. Part of the reason why some think our first President did so is related to the attitudes and actions in his life that were favorable toward Catholics.

Throughout his public life, Washington was known to be more favorably disposed toward Catholics than was usual for a man of his social standing. Many of the officers he relied upon most closely during the Revolutionary War were themselves Catholic, including the Marquis de Lafayette, who was almost like a son. He almost put an end to anti-Catholic customs, like Pope Night, among his soldiers, calling the demonstrations idiotic.

He attended Mass on a number of occasions at St. Mary’s in Philadelphia over the years, as a sign of acceptance of religious plurality in America. He would later write a letter to Charles Carroll–the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence–and his brother who become American’s first bishop, John Carroll of his hope that Americans would not forget the vital role that Catholics played in independence. A letter to a Jewish congregation in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1790 of the right to religious liberty now enjoyed by all Americans:

“The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.”

Washington was also known for his generosity toward the construction of several Catholic Churches in Philadelphia; Alexandria, Virginia; and Baltimore. In addition, it is known that he kept a painting of the Immaculate Conception in his private room in Philadelphia and that he crossed himself before prayers. But it was in 1799, after ending his service as President, as Washington lay dying at Mount Vernon that he called for Jesuit Father Leonard Neale to be with him at his deathbed. Fr. Neale stayed by Washington’s bedside for four hours before his death.
While none of that constitutes definitive evidence of conversion, it does paint an interesting portrait of the tolerant and pious man that was George Washington. What do you think?

For much more about George Washington and his attitudes toward Catholicism, listen to American Catholic History, Episode #85 and check out the links to further resources.

The American Catholic History podcast, hosted by Tom and Noelle Crowe, finds the hidden gems and compelling stories of Catholic Americans who have contributed to their nation by virtue of their faith over the past three centuries. Arise! Jesus says

“God did not make death,” the Book of Wisdom asserts in our first reading this Sunday, “For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of His own nature He made him. But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world.” (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24).

In our Gospel, Jesus raises a young girl from the dead and heals a hemorrhaging woman. Christ makes it clear that He desires for us, life and life in abundance, and that includes the life to come that will overcome even death.

Do we believe that?  Do we believe that God is involved actively in our world and has a plan for our lives?

Let’s prepare ourselves to participate at Holy Mass where Father Don is preaching, by watching the short video on the Flocknote email from Matt Nelson, an author and Fellow of Apologetics at the Word on Fire Institute, from their new series Catholicism 101, to learn more about the power of God in our history.

Looking forward to seeing you at Holy Mass!

June 26 – Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

At this time of the year, parishes throughout the Diocese often experience a change in staff. OLM is no exception. It is with mixed feelings that I announce that Jean Rehmer who has worked as a secretary in our Religious Education office for the past 18 years is retiring at the end of June. I say mixed feelings because retirement is a happy thing to look forward to, but Jean will be sorely missed! Jean has been a huge behind the scenes support to our staff, catechists, and leaders in the Junior High (EDGE) and High School (LIGHT) religious education programs for our parish youth and teens. Taking care of all the details for Confirmation and many other celebrations and programs, Jean has been the one to answer all your calls and questions. She has especially enjoyed meeting and working with our parish youth and teens, always offering support and encouragement to them. Jean has also worked with and coordinated RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) for the past 15 years. She has also covered the parish office reception desk and answered phones when needed. Jean has always been gracious and willing to perform any needed tasks.

Jean and her husband Deacon Phil (who retired a few months ago) have also been great witnesses to their faith. Members of OLM for 28 years, both volunteered in baptismal preparation ministry for many years. Jean also was a catechist for several years prior to employment at OLM. Both Jean and Deacon Phil have been powerful witnesses to justice and peace ministry with their commitment to Hesed House and PADS. They will continue to coordinate our Hesed House/PADS ministry at OLM during their retirement.

So, Jean, we thank you for all you have done for us at OLM and wish you all the best in your retirement!

God Bless Jean Rehmer!

Have a blessed week!

Father Don
