The novena to the Holy Spirit is significant because 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗮. Before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He instructed our Lady and His disciples to return to Jerusalem to pray and wait for the promise of the Father. As our Lady and the disciples waited and prayed, let us do so as well.

On May 4, 1897, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed: “We decree and command that throughout the whole Catholic Church, this year and in every subsequent year, a novena shall take place before Pentecost, in all parish churches.” (Encyclical On the Holy Spirit, 13).
