News From the Parochial Vicar
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the familiar Parable of the Sower. A farmer generously scatters seeds, which land on various terrains: a path, rocky soil, among thorns, and rich soil. Admittedly, I do not have the slightest idea about farming, but even I would see this as an inefficient and ineffective way to sow seeds. However, Jesus’ point is not about efficient farming techniques. It is about the abundant generosity of God.
The seed represents God’s Word, which is offered freely to everyone. The question is not whether God is speaking, but how we receive what He gives. At different moments in our lives, our hearts can resemble any of the four kinds of soil. Sometimes we are distracted, and God’s Word never takes root. At other times we receive it with joy but allow difficulties or daily worries to crowd out its growth. Yet God never stops sowing. He never stops showering His grace upon us with great abundance. He continues to invite us into a deeper relationship with Him, patiently nurturing our faith.
This Gospel challenges us to prepare the soil of our hearts. Prayer, reading Scripture, and acts of charity help remove the rocks of resentment, the thorns of anxiety, and the hardness that can keep God’s grace from taking root. Perhaps the most significant way to prepare the soil of our hearts is through the reception of the Sacraments, namely receiving the Eucharist worthily and through our regular reception of the Sacrament of Penance.
