𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱’𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 This evening’s Gospel “contains a phrase that is the very core of what Jesus did for us: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. Jesus loves us to the point of giving his life for us. And every one of us can say: He gave his life for me” (Pope Francis). It is not a coincidence that this assurance of the Lord’s love is joined to the institution of both the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Holy Orders: Jesus continues to stoop, to wash us, to serve us, to sanctify us, and to love us through the priesthood and the Eucharist.

𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆
This night of Holy Thursday is one of the most eventful and significant days in Jesus’ entire life and, therefore, ours as well, for on this night, our Lord Jesus gave us three gifts by which He would remain with us always; 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲.
So as we remember the night when Jesus instituted not only the Eucharist but the priesthood as well, imagine the privilege and responsibility given to priests to act in the person of Christ as teacher and pastor! Surely this institution deserves to be honored—and those called to the priesthood deserve our prayer and support.
As you ponder today’s readings, think of the many times that you have been absolved of your sins and been reconciled to God through the ministry of a priest. Think of all the Masses that priests have said and all the grace that has been given to you at these Masses—grace to strengthen and purify you, grace to give you comfort and wisdom and guidance, grace to affirm God’s love for you again and again. Think, too, of the numerous times that a priest has opened God’s word for you, as well as all the last rites given and funerals presided over for family members and friends.
Consider everything that flows to us through the ministry of the priesthood, and you will agree with St. John Vianney, the patron saint of priests: "A good priest is the greatest treasure the good Lord can grant to a parish and one of the precious gifts of divine mercy."
Yet for all this grace, the world tends to focus on the small minority of priests who fail in their duties, those whose actions bring scandal to the gospel and the church. 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯, 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘸𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴. Here at Our Lady of Mercy we have a prayer group that has been praying for priests in front of the Blessed Sacrament weekly for several years now, as well as on First Fridays. 𝙋𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝙪𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨, 𝙁𝙧 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙚𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙧 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙠, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙞𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙚. Even if you can't join the group inside the church, you can pray wherever you are at during the following times
Wednesdays at 10:30am - Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,
Thursdays at 12:30pm - Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with meditations for priests,
First Friday of the month following 12pm Mass - Stations of the Cross with meditations for priests in the narthex.
Why do we need to pray for our priests? The demands of their calling are numerous. The pressures they face in a sometimes hostile world are high. And the sacrifices that they make out of love for the Lord and His people are heroic. May we never forget all that we owe them. And may we always hold them in reverence and respect. They are our fathers as well as our brothers. Let us support and journey with them through prayer. Perhaps even send them a note of affirmation and thanksgiving for their daily yes to their heroic vocation as a holy priest of Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father, we give You praise and thanks for the blessing of the Arts and Environment Team @ OLM for the way they share their time, talent and treasure so as to help us pause from the way we get wrapped up in the things that inform our daily lives that we fail to appreciate the often-indescribable magnificence of the natural world around us-everything from the beauty of a single small flower to the splendor of the stars visible on a clear night, all of which were created by You for us.
Thank you for gifting the team and inspiring in them their creative charisms that always point us to the grandeur and beauty of Your creation. Please bless each of the members of the Arts and Environment Team @ OLM, healing them and equipping them in every way. We pray all this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
